THE ORIGIN
The name of the original school was kapkatet secondary school named after Kapkatet market where it is situated. It was founded in 1974 by surrounding community on a self-help funding. Since then, it has grown tremendously in strength and size from one original mixed school to its current four schools: Tengecha Boys High School,Tengecha Girls high school. Tengecha Boys Boarding Primary school and Tengecha Girls Boarding primary school. The original name Kapkatet secondary school was however changed in April, 1983 to Tengecha High school. The change was made following a resolutions passed by the community at a public baraza held in 1981 at the school which was attended by professor Jonathan Ng’eno who was then the Bureti M.P and minister for Basic Education.
The community’s resolution to use Tengecha’s name was in appreciation, gratitude, honor and recognition of Senior Chief Tengecha for his vision in setting aside the 32-acre school land in 1943 during his tenure as chief of Bureti. His dream at the time was the construction of a high school on the said land that would in future grow to a university.
